In this interview, we speak with Programme Director, Dr Alessandro De Martino about the MSc Mathematics and MSc Mathematics with Data Science.

Academic interests and expertise

Can you tell us about your academic and research background?

I am a theoretical condensed matter physicist. My research focuses on how the interactions between elementary constituents, such as electrons and atoms, give rise to the fascinating and often unexpected properties of materials.

What inspired you to specialise in your current field of study?

I was drawn to theoretical condensed matter physics because it combines the beauty of fundamental physics with the challenge of explaining the complex behaviour of real-world materials. The idea that deep mathematical concepts can help us understand and even predict the properties of materials is both inspiring and intellectually rewarding. I find it exciting to work in a field that not only deepens our understanding of the physical world but also has the potential to drive technological advances in areas such as electronics, quantum computing, and materials science.

What do you enjoy most about teaching and mentoring students?

I enjoy helping students develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and seeing them apply their knowledge creatively to solve problems. It’s very rewarding to watch students grow in confidence, develop and explore their own interests, and pursue ambitious career goals, whether in academia or industry.

Why this course?

What makes this postgraduate programme unique within its field?

The MSc in Mathematics and the MSc in Mathematics with Data Science offer a distinctive blend of rigorous theoretical foundations and practical applications. The extended project allows students to explore a topic of academic or industrial relevance in depth. The interdisciplinary focus, especially the integration of mathematics with data science, ensures that graduates are well-prepared for a wide range of professional careers.

What support is offered to help students transition from undergraduate to postgraduate study?

Students benefit from close academic supervision, dedicated personal tutors, and a supportive learning community. We also provide guidance on project work, career pathways, and technical skills, ensuring a smooth transition to the demands of postgraduate study.

Are there opportunities for students to tailor the programme based on their specific academic or career interests?

Students can select optional modules aligned with their interests and choose a project topic that reflects their career aspirations.

Career paths

How does the programme help students develop skills for their future careers, whether in academia or industry?

The programmes emphasise analytical thinking and problem-solving, which are essential in both academia and industry. Through project work and exposure to advanced techniques in mathematics and data science, students develop the expertise needed for research roles, technical positions in data-driven industries, or further study at PhD level.

What career paths have graduates from this programme typically followed?

The skills and knowledge students will gain, particularly in areas such as advanced mathematics, data analysis, and problem-solving, are highly valued in a wide range of fields. These include careers in finance, technology, data science, research, and academia, as well as further study at PhD level.

Tips for offer holders

If you could highlight one thing that students should look forward to in this programme, what would it be?

The opportunity to engage in a substantial research project, applying mathematical knowledge to real-world problems, is a highlight of the programme. It’s a chance for students to deepen their expertise and showcase their abilities.

What advice would you offer to offer holders as they prepare to join this course?

I encourage offer holders to come in with an open and curious mind. Be ready to explore new ideas, engage with different perspectives, and apply mathematics in innovative ways. Developing strong problem-solving and analytical skills will serve you well throughout the programme.
