In this interview, we sit down with Bhavina Patel, Programme Director of our MSc in Clinical Optometry.

Academic interests and expertise

Can you tell us about your academic and research background?

I hold a BSc in Optometry and a postgraduate diploma in Clinical Optometry. I have completed various professional qualifications, including diplomas in Independent Prescribing and Glaucoma, as well as certificates in Medical Retina, Low Vision, and Paediatrics. My research interests focus on glaucoma, acute eye conditions, and clinical education in independent prescribing.

What inspired you to specialise in your current field of study?

My passion for improving patient outcomes in acute and chronic eye conditions, particularly glaucoma, inspired me to pursue further qualifications and specialisation. Working at the community and hospital levels exposed me to the value of advanced clinical decision-making, leading me to focus on independent prescribing and specialist glaucoma care.

What do you enjoy most about teaching and mentoring students?

I enjoy guiding students through real-world clinical reasoning, helping them connect theory with practical decision-making. Seeing their confidence grow, especially in complex cases, is incredibly rewarding. Mentoring also allows me to contribute to the development of safe, effective practitioners who are well-prepared for evolving healthcare needs.
