General funding

It’s best to start exploring funding options as early as possible, ideally at the same time you apply for your course. As funding routes and eligibility criteria vary, we encourage you to review what is available to you and note relevant application deadlines.

What types of funding are available for postgraduate study?

There are a wide range of funding options for postgraduate students, including government loans for eligible UK nationals or those with settled status, university scholarships, bursaries, and grants. Doctoral students may also be eligible for specific research loans.

The University provides scholarships and bursaries for different courses and student groups, as well as a Hardship Fund to support students facing unexpected financial difficulties. Funding availability varies depending on your course and residency status, so it’s worth exploring all options once you have received your offer.

The Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding provides guidance on contacting Trusts and Charities for financial support. You will need the following details to login:

  • Username: fundsservice@city.ac.uk
  • Password: Rubber1!

When should I start looking and applying for funding opportunities?

For scholarships and bursaries from City St George’s, application processes and deadlines can vary. Most of our scholarships can be applied for once you receive an offer from the University, and some of our bursaries also require an application. For full details, please check our scholarship and bursary finder.

Starting early gives you time to gather required documents, such as transcripts or personal statements, and ensures you don’t miss any opportunities. If eligible, you can apply for a Student Finance England Postgraduate Master’s Loan as soon as applications open for your academic year (usually May/June before the course starts). You do not need a confirmed place – you can apply using your intended course and university, then update details later. Student Finance England recommends applying early to allow for processing time, and the final deadline is nine months after the first day of your course’s final academic year.

Can I apply for funding if I’m studying part-time?

Yes, some funding options are available for part-time postgraduate students. For example, a Postgraduate Master’s Loan – open to UK nationals or those with settled status – can be used for part-time study, provided the course meets the required eligibility e.g., at least 180 credits and lasting two to four academic years – no more than twice the length of the equivalent full-time course.

Not all scholarships or bursaries are available for part-time students, and eligibility varies depending on the award and course. It’s best to check the details for your specific programme and contact the Student Funding team for guidance.

Can I defer funding if I take a break from my studies?

Deferring funding depends on the type of support you have, as rules vary by award and course.

If you plan to take a break, check with your funding provider and contact the Income team at City St George’s for guidance on how it may affect your tuition fees.

What documents do I need when applying for financial aid or scholarships?

The documents required depend on the award, but usually include academic transcripts or certificates, a personal statement, and sometimes a CV or references. Some awards may also ask for information about your finances to check eligibility.

Check the dedicated page for each scholarship or bursary, as some may have additional forms or supporting documents to submit.

I’ve been sponsored for my tuition fees. What do I need to do?

If you have been sponsored, you must provide City St George's with your sponsorship details by sending a sponsorship form or your sponsorship agreement to income@citystgeorges.ac.uk before you can complete Online Registration. Once submitted, we will advise you when the details have been processed so you can continue and complete your registration. Once you have fully completed the registration process, an invoice will be sent to your sponsor for payment.

Scholarships and bursaries

We offer a variety of postgraduate scholarships and bursaries each year, including merit-based, need-based, and programme-specific awards. Many scholarships cover tuition fees in full or in part, and some may contribute to living costs. Check the specific scholarship page for full details.

What scholarships or bursaries are available for incoming postgraduate students?

You can search for external and internal funding opportunities using our search tool.

Are there any scholarships specifically for my postgraduate programme or course?

Yes, some of our scholarships and bursaries are tied to subject areas or courses. For example, there are programme-specific awards across our individual Schools. Availability changes each year, so the best way to check is to view the funding options listed on your course page. For students studying on one of our Bayes Business School courses you can also look at the Bayes Master's Scholarships page.

What is the application process for postgraduate scholarships?

The application process depends on the scholarship. Some awards are considered automatically when you apply for your course, while others require a separate application. If an application is needed, you may be asked to submit documents such as a personal statement, academic transcripts, or evidence of financial circumstances.

We list the requirements for each scholarship on its dedicated page, so it’s helpful to review the details early to make sure you don’t miss any steps or deadlines.

Can I apply for or combine multiple scholarships and funding sources?

Some scholarships and funding options can be combined, while others cannot. Each award has its own rules on eligibility and whether it can be held alongside other support.

It’s important to check the terms of each scholarship or bursary you’re considering to see if it can be combined with other awards or funding sources.

Are there employer or industry-sponsored funding opportunities?

Yes – you may be able to secure funding through an employer or registered sponsor, because City St George’s supports corporate tuition sponsorship. However, this depends on your individual employer’s funding policy and on the university’s sponsorship arrangements.

If you think your company might sponsor you, check with your employer and review the “Tuition Fees & Payments” guidance on our Student Hub to understand how sponsorship is invoiced and applied.

UK government funding

UK government funding offers loans and support for postgraduate study to eligible students. Here’s how to check your eligibility and apply.

How do I apply for funding through UK government loan schemes?

If you’re a UK national or have settled status, you may be eligible for a Postgraduate Student Loan for master’s or doctoral programmes.

You can apply for a Student Finance England Postgraduate Master’s Loan as soon as applications open for your academic year (usually May/June before the course starts). You do not need a confirmed place – you can apply using your intended course and university and update details later. Student Finance England recommends applying early to allow for processing time, and the final deadline is nine months after the first day of your course’s final academic year.

If you’re an international student, you won’t be eligible for these loans, but you may be able to apply for UK government-funded scholarships such as Chevening, Commonwealth, or Marshall Scholarships. These awards can help cover tuition fees and, in some cases, living costs. Each scholarship has its own eligibility criteria and application process, so check the relevant website for details.

What is the Learning Support Fund and how do I know if I’m eligible?

The NHS Learning Support Fund helps students on certain NHS-funded courses, like nursing, midwifery, and allied health programmes. It includes a £5,000 training grant, extra payments for specialist subjects, and allowances for travel or accommodation during placements.

To be eligible, you must be on a qualifying course and meet the Student Finance England criteria. Applications are made online through the NHS Learning Support Fund system

International student funding

International student funding depends on your residency, country of origin, and course. UK government loans are only open to UK nationals or students with settled status; international students can access additional funding support through internal or external scholarships.

How do I apply for financial support as an international student?

You can apply for financial support by first checking the funding options listed on your course page and in our Funding finder, then following the links to any scholarships that require a separate application. Most will ask for documents such as transcripts, your passport, a CV, and a short statement. If you are experiencing difficulties with your living costs, you can apply to the University’s hardship fund where you will be required to submit an online application form and provide evidence to support your application. Further details regarding the application process can be found here.

Do I need a visa to access funding as an international student?

International students on a visa can apply for most scholarships or bursaries – a visa does not prevent eligibility. However, some awards have additional nationality or residency requirements, so check each scholarship’s criteria.

UK government loans are only available to UK nationals or students with settled status, so international students on a visa cannot access these loans.

What scholarships are available for international postgraduate students?

City St  George’s offers a variety of scholarships and bursaries for international postgraduate students. Awards may cover tuition fees, and in some cases, contribute to living costs. You can search for external schemes and university funding opportunities using our search tool.

Can I apply to a part-time job if I am on a student visa?

If you are on a full-time Student visa at City St George’s, you can work up to 20 hours per week during term time, and full-time during official university breaks. If your course includes an assessed and integral placement, you may be allowed to work full-time during that placement. Part-time students on a Student visa are not allowed to work, and cannot be permanently employed, self-employed, or start a business while on this visa.

Living costs and financial management

Postgraduate study involves costs beyond tuition. Here, you’ll find guidance on budgeting, managing your finances, and where to find support if needed.

Are there part-time job opportunities available on or near campus to help with expenses?

Yes. We partner with Unitemps, our on‑campus recruitment service, which advertises flexible part-time roles both at City St George’s and with nearby businesses.

Additionally, the CareersHub offers a student job board where you can find part-time roles, internships, and placements.

You can also look for opportunities through the Students’ Union, which regularly has student staff roles that fit around your academic timetable.

What should I do if I can’t pay my tuition fee or deposit on time, or encounter a technical issue?

Fees and deposits must be paid by the deadlines. If you have a technical problem or genuine difficulty meeting the deadline, contact the Income team immediately for guidance. Payment obligations remain, and late payment may affect your enrolment.

Who can I contact for financial advice or support during my studies?

You can contact the Student Funding team for advice on tuition fees, scholarships, bursaries, loans, and hardship support. They can guide you through applications, eligibility, and any financial concerns you may have during your studies.
