What is the Big Network?
Get started
How do I access the platform?
You can access the Community on Unibuddy by clicking here. You can join via a free mobile application (available on the iOS or Android App stores) or through your web browser.
When you enter the The Big Network for the first time, you’ll be asked to create an account. Please use the same email address you provided in your application. If you’ve already created a Unibuddy account with this email, simply sign in using your existing password.
How does the platform work?
After registering and logging into your Unibuddy account, you will find three features waiting for you:
- Inbox – This section holds all your ongoing chats within groups you have joined. It might be empty at first, but don't worry! Just head over to the 'Explore' tab to view and join existing groups.
- Explore – This is where the fun begins! The 'Explore' section allows you to discover various groups we've created to cover a range of topics. Simply browse through the options, choose any group that appeals to you, and click the 'join' button to become a member.
- Updates – Here, you will find information on events and opportunities we think will be of interest to you. Keep an eye out for exciting news and updates!
How the Community works
- Public groups – We have a range of public group chats that you can join to meet people by School, interests, and hobbies. If you can't find a group that fits your needs, you can request the creation of new public groups that others can take part in.
- Private groups – You can create private individual and group chats to exchange direct messages with each other. These are a great way to have private conversations within the safety of the platform.
Please note: University staff cannot access these conversations but is available to offer support if any issues arise.
We recommend keeping all conversations within the Unibuddy platform. However, if you choose to create group chats on social networks or external platforms, please be mindful that we cannot intervene on any other platforms you use to make connections.
What are the Community rules?
To keep our Offer Holder Community a safe and welcoming space for everyone, we've created some rules for you to follow:
- Be kind – Our goal is to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment. Please treat everyone with respect. While healthy debates are encouraged, kindness is essential.
- No hate or bullying – Make sure that everyone feels safe. Bullying, harassment, or any form of hateful behaviour will not be tolerated.
- Keep it appropriate – Avoid using offensive language, sharing inappropriate content, or engaging in behaviour that could make others uncomfortable.
- Stay on topic – Keep discussions relevant to the group’s theme. If you want to start a conversation on a different topic, consider joining or creating a new group.
- No promotions or spam – Self-promotion, spamming, or sharing irrelevant links is not allowed.
- Respect everyone's privacy – Mutual trust is key to participating in these groups. While discussions can add value and encourage open conversation, they may also touch on sensitive and private topics. For your safety, please do not share personal information like your address, phone number, or bank details.
- Report issues – If you see anyone displaying inappropriate behaviour, please report them by clicking on their profile and selecting the 'Report User' button. This will notify our admin team to review the issue. You also have the option to block other users yourself, preventing them from contacting you again.
By joining our Big Network on the Unibuddy platform, you agree with the rules outlined above. If you break one of these rules, you may be removed and banned from the platform.
Top tips
- Customise your profile – You can add your photo and tell a bit about yourself, but it's entirely optional so no pressure! Just remember, your profile is visible to others, so only share what you're comfortable with.
- Be mindful of sharing personal information – Avoid sharing personal information like your phone number or address. Although it's your choice, we advise against it to protect your privacy and security.
- Exercise caution with links – Think carefully before clicking on any links not posted by our staff. These may not be official City St George's links and could redirect you to other platforms or websites. While it's your decision to follow external links, please note that we do not monitor them.
How can I get help with technical issues?
If you encounter any difficulties in accessing the platform or logging in, please email unibuddy@citystgeorges.ac.uk and we will look into this for you.
