City St George’s scooped the win for the ninth year running after a closely fought contest with Kingston University. Meet the brilliant sports teams at the heart of the University’s win and get your run-down of all the results here.
Day one: Smashing it out of the court
First on court to kick start Varsity were the Badminton teams. Volleying at speed, City St George’s women's, men’s and mixed teams smashed it with all three taking the win: 3-1 for the women, 4-0 for the men and 2-1 in the mixed game.
Volleyball took charge next. The women led the way to victory with a 2-0 win, with the men’s and mixed teams narrowly missing out, coming in at 2-1 for the men and 2-0 in the mixed game.
It was all about hoops in the evening. The first Netball team scooped a win of 28-24 with the second team losing by a four-point margin. Hot on their heels were the women’s and men’s basketball teams who rounded off the first day on a high with a 2-0 overall win.
After a full day of on court action, the teams met again for day two to secure where they would secure the victory on the field.
Day two: Taking to the field with football, cricket, athletics, rugby, tennis and American football
Kicking off day two were the men’s 3rd football team followed later in the day by the men’s 2nd and 1st football teams. A challenging day on the pitch saw the men’s 3rd team lose, but softening the blow were wins for the 1st team (3-0) and 2nd team (1-0).
With no clear-cut winner of the Varsity trophy yet, the cricket team swung into action. Not a lucky day on the field as they suffered a defeat on Kingston’s pitches, followed by a narrow loss for the athletics team, a new sporting addition this year.
Turning the heat back up, the women’s football team brought home a 3-2 win, the tennis team netting a 2-1 win, followed by a definitive play by the men’s rugby team, beating Kingston 48-24 on the pitch.
Two action-packed days lead to a brilliant victory for the City St George’s sports teams, who lifted the trophy and saw in their victory at the Varsity afterparty at the Student Union’s Dragon Bar in Tooting.
Varsity is the annual sports competition between City St George’s and another London university. 2025 marks a ninth consecutive win with Kingston University. Huge congratulations to the sports teams and massive thanks to the fans who cheered each team on over the two days!
