Victoria has helped grow On the Rise into a buzzing creative space for students to share their talents, while also developing her leadership skills through a global programme in Vietnam.

Victoria Uehara, a BSc Media, Communications, and Sociology student, has played a key role in shaping On the Rise into the thriving creative space it is today as the main organiser.

Victoria's hard work evolving On the Rise has given students the opportunity to perform outside their studies, bringing the community closer together and helping to celebrate student talent.

How did you get started with On the Rise?

Victoria has always enjoyed singing and acting, she says:

“Having a space where I feel comfortable sharing my art is something I've always sought out.”

As a course representative for the School of Communications and Creativity, Victoria and her fellow reps came up with the idea to create a space where students could explore their passion for performing.

“When we first took over On the Rise, it was a smaller event mainly for experienced musicians. But we wanted to open it up for every student from any school to give them a chance to perform.

“We thought, why not also include poetry, acting, photography or film? There are so many students with incredible talents."

Finding the right space was key to bringing this vision to life. With help from Nicola Erlank, Events Manager at the School of Communications and Creativity, Victoria and her team were able to secure the Music department’s performance space.

“Securing a better venue made a huge difference. With a stage, better lighting, and the right ambience, we could give performers a much better experience.

Students also volunteer to support the event. Victoria says:

“Music students have been incredibly helpful at every edition, offering to help with organising the music, handling the sound tech, and preparing instruments."

What was your proudest moment with On the Rise?

"The October edition was the biggest highlight for me. It was our first time in the new venue, and we had over 60 guests. Everything came together with amazing performers, great energy and a real sense of support among students.

"I did one of my first solo performances and felt shy at first, but people were so positive. They asked questions, shared their thoughts and encouraged me.

"Someone even said, ‘You should release a single!’ That kind of support is exactly what we wanted to create."

Running the events have helped Victoria build her event management skills, which tie into her future career goals in communications.

“City St George's has so many opportunities. If you have an idea and reach out, there is always a way to make it happen. It has really nurtured my interests and turned them into reality.”

How did you develop your global leadership skills?

In the same year, Victoria stepped into a new challenge by taking part in a fully funded leadership programme in Vietnam through City St George's Global Opportunities scheme. Victoria completed a one month internship with Publicis Groupe, a leading marketing and digital transformation company.

“I participated in a leadership programme through Common Purpose in Vietnam as part of my Global Opportunities experience.

"The programme offered a unique chance to step outside my comfort zone and immerse myself in a new environment while exploring leadership through a global lens.”

“The connections I made were the highlight. I worked with peers from different cultural, professional, and personal backgrounds, which gave me a deeper appreciation for diversity in leadership. Engaging in team challenges, exploring local initiatives, and exchanging ideas inspired me and broadened my perspectives.”

“Successfully leading a multicultural team through a complex challenge was my proudest moment. I learned that effective leadership requires adaptability, empathy, and the ability to inspire trust in diverse settings.”

Would you recommend it to other students?

“Absolutely! This programme was a unique opportunity to grow as a leader, develop cultural intelligence, and form meaningful connections. It’s perfect for students looking to broaden their horizons and gain hands-on experience in real-world leadership scenarios. If you’re thinking about trying something new, go for it-you won’t regret it!”

“City St George's career services, like mock interviews, supported me through the application process. Go Global events provided insights into the summer abroad program, and the funding for travel and accommodation made it possible for me to participate.”
