Throughout Giulia’s six months in Australia, she stepped outside of her comfort zone, built confidence, and collaborated with talented individuals from around the world.

Giulia Memaj, a BSc International Business student at City St George’s spent six months studying at The University of Queensland (UQ) in Brisbane, Australia, through the Global Opportunities programme.

Ranked among the top universities in the world, UQ Business School provided her with a diverse and inspiring learning environment, where she collaborated on business ventures with talented individuals from across the globe.

“I went there as one person and came back as another - more confident, more open, and more independent,” she says.

“Working with people from so many different backgrounds really challenged me. Even when our ideas didn’t always align, we found ways to bring them together and create some amazing projects.”

Stepping out of her comfort zone

Determined to embrace every opportunity, Giulia joined multiple societies, including beach volleyball, surfing, and the exchange student society, where she made friends from all over the world.

“I’ve always been quite introverted, but this experience pushed me to step out of my comfort zone. I had to be more outgoing, more social and I loved it.”

Her exchange experience inspired her to become a Global Opportunities Ambassador at City St George’s, helping other students explore international study.

“Going abroad was the best decision I’ve made at university. I wanted to share that experience and encourage other students to take the leap.”

Building skills through real-world experience

Beyond her time in Australia, Giulia also gained valuable work experience through a Microplacement at Loop Music, secured through Bayes Business School. As a Marketing Assistant, she played a key role in a major marketing campaign with promotional materials displayed across London’s underground and client networks.

“Seeing my work being used for a real business, especially after just finishing my first year, was a huge achievement. It gave me the confidence to pursue more opportunities in business.”

Reflecting on her time at City St George’s she encourages students to take advantage of every opportunity available. “If you don’t challenge yourself, if you don’t put yourself out there, you’re not going to grow. It’s all about being willing to experience new things.”

Advice for students considering global opportunities

Studying abroad had a huge impact on Giulia. “I think it was one of the best university memories I have so far. It was life-changing.

Her advice to students: “Embrace as many opportunities as possible. Even just checking your emails when you are invited to go to events, just do it. That’s how you figure out what you enjoy.”
