City Law School

The ceremony will be held at The Barbican, near our Clerkenwell campus. There are many transport links to the site and you can download a useful map showing you where in the building you need to go.

Please remain seated throughout the ceremony and stand only for the incoming and outgoing processions.

  • The Silk Street entrance of the Barbican Centre

    1. Registration - Box Office (level -1)

    Arrive at least an hour before your ceremony.

    The Box Office is marked on this map and will be open from 12:15 to 13:15 for your ceremony.

    TOP TIP! Your confirmation email is required at registration, so connect to the WIFI as soon as you enter the building as signal is limited in areas.

    2. Gowning (level -1)

    After Registration, go to the gowning area to collect your gown (from Ede and Ravenscroft).

    The gowning area is marked on the site map.

    3. Photography and filming/clips

    Photography (level 0)

    Tempest photography studios are marked on the site map.

    If you wish to purchase official Graduation photographs, studios are available before and after the ceremony.

    TOP TIP! Go before the ceremony to avoid much larger queues afterwards.

    Filming/clips

    The ceremony is filmed and live streamed. Ceremonies will be available to watch online approximately 1 week after your graduation.

    A clip of you crossing the stage will be emailed to you shortly after the ceremony.

    4. Your ceremony

    All graduands will be seated in the Stalls level (level -1). Guest seating will be detailed on their tickets.

    Your ceremony will last approximately 90 minutes and you will be called up with your cohort to cross the stage.

    When you cross the stage, the Presiding Officer will doff their hat to you and you may return the gesture back. You will then collect your certificate on the edge of the stage. Once you have received your certificate, please return to your seat for the rest of the ceremony.

    Photography and mobile telephones

    Please do not move from your seats to take photographs or make video recordings during the ceremony and please ensure that your mobile telephones are on silent for the duration of the ceremony.

  • Graduates and guests after graduation

    5. Alumni (level 0)

    Please visit the Alumni & Supporter Relations team at the stall in the Barbican ground floor foyer, next to the cafe. This is a great opportunity to grab your first piece of alumni merchandise by updating your details at the stand.

Professor Richard Ashcroft: Executive Dean, The City Law School

Professor Ashcroft studied mathematics and history & philosophy of science at the University of Cambridge, where he went on to complete a doctorate on ethics in scientific research. He began his research career in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Liverpool, before going on to teaching and research positions in the medical schools of the University of Bristol, Imperial College London and Queen Mary, University of London.

He moved into legal education at the Department of Law at Queen Mary, before joining City, University of London as Deputy Dean of The City Law School in September 2019. Since September 2022, he has been Dean. He has published more than 150 articles and book chapters on topics in bioethics and medical law, mainly in the fields of research ethics and ethics in public health.

He has wide ranging research interest in the ethical aspects of new technologies, and in 2018/19 was a Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute. He continues to teach medical law and ethics. He has also held numerous public appointments, including current membership of the Tobacco Advisory Group of the Royal College of Physicians of London.

In his spare time, he is a keen follower of cricket.

  4. Award of degrees
  5. Closing address: Gisoo Akhavan-Foumani & Daniella Tamburrino Desa (Bachelor of Laws)
  6. Outgoing procession: accompanied by ‘Sonata from Die Bankelsangerlieder’ by Daniel Speer
