Professor Natalie Armstrong joined City St George’s as Executive Dean of the School of Health & Medical Sciences in January 2025. Natalie is an internationally recognised health services researcher whose work uses ideas and methods from the social sciences to better understand, and seek to address, problems in the delivery of high quality healthcare.

Prior to joining City St George’s, Natalie was the Deputy Head of the College of Life Sciences at the University of Leicester, having previously been a Head of Department. As part of her role, Natalie was also the University-appointed Non-Executive Director to the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire Group.

Natalie is Professor of Health Services Research having completed a BSc (Hons) Politics & Sociology at the University of Warwick, an MSc in Medical Sociology at Royal Holloway, University of London, and her PhD at the University of Nottingham. Following postdoctoral positions at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the University of Warwick, Natalie took up her first academic post in 2008 as Lecturer in Social Science Applied to Health at the University of Leicester. She was promoted to Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in 2014, and to Professor in 2017.

Natalie’s appointment as the inaugural Executive Dean of the School of Health & Medical Sciences at City St George’s, followed the completion of the merger between City, University of London and St George’s, University of London. As part of her role, Natalie is delighted to be the University-appointed Non-Executive Director to the St George’s, Epsom and St Helier Hospital Group.

Honorary Fellowship

Professor Jenny Higham

She joined St George's in November 2015, becoming the institution's first female Principal and first Vice-Chancellor. During her tenure, she led the university through a merger that created City St George's, University of London in 2024.

Professor Higham has a specialist medical background and previously chaired the Medical Schools Council, becoming the first and only woman to hold that position. Her academic career began at Imperial College London, where she rose to become Vice-Dean for Institutional Affairs and Director of Education in the Faculty of Medicine. While at Imperial, she worked closely with Nanyang Technological University to help establish a new joint medical school in Singapore.

In addition to her Vice-Chancellor role, Professor Higham holds several national leadership positions within the higher education sector. She serves on the board of the Universities and Colleges Employers Association as Deputy Chair, and is also a board member of Universities UK. She is currently serving her second term as UUK’s Funding and Regulation Policy Lead.

In May 2024, Professor Higham was awarded the Freedom of the City of London, following unanimous approval by the Court of Common Council.

The City St George’s, School of Health & Medical Sciences (Tooting) Skills and Recognition Award is an initiative where students can showcase the skills they’ve developed in academia and extra-curricular initiatives and activities outside of their programme of study. The Award offers students the opportunity to make the most of their experience by reflecting on and demonstrating essential transferrable skills that will benefit them throughout their entire careers.

There are two types of Award – the School of Health & Medical Sciences' Skills and Recognition Award, which focuses on 7 skills, and the School of Health & Medical Sciences' Skills and Recognition Master Award, which focuses on all 11 skills: Commercial awareness, Communication, Digital literacy, Innovation and creativity, Interpersonal, Leadership and management, Analysis, Planning & organisation, Research & investigation, Problem solving and Teamwork.
