Clearing FAQs

What is Clearing?

Clearing is the period around results time which offers students an opportunity to explore alternative universities and courses.

When is Clearing open?

Clearing opens on Thursday 2 July, but is available to you once you receive your results.

Who can use Clearing?

You're automatically eligible if:

  • You're not holding any offers due to not meeting the grades of your firm/insurance.
  • You're not holding any offers because you declined or withdrew from all your main cycle choices.

You can also enter Clearing if:

  • You're holding an offer but wish to change universities or courses due to unexpected exam results or a change of heart.
  • You didn't apply to UCAS during the main cycle and want to make a fresh Clearing-only application.

How can I apply to City St George's through Clearing?

You can apply to Clearing courses at City St George's via our online webform. Ensure you have your UCAS ID, course number, and qualifications ready as you will need to input these.

Once you complete the webform, you will receive one of three responses: You may be offered a place, you may be told that you have been unsuccessful for that course, or it may be necessary for you to speak to an academic or admissions colleague before we make a decision. You will be given details on how to get in touch with us, or alternatively we will contact you.

What courses are available at City St George's in Clearing?

Courses that are currently available in Clearing will be shown on our webform at citystgeorges.ac.uk/clearing.

Some courses that are currently shown as closed may reopen between now and Thursday 13 August. We strongly recommend checking from Wednesday 12 August as some courses will open just before Results Day.

If a course is showing as closed from Thursday morning onwards it is unlikely that places will become available, and we encourage you to look at other courses or universities.

How do I know if I've received an offer?

Clearing is slightly different to the main UCAS cycle, and you need to apply to universities directly using their Clearing application system to see if you get an offer before adding anything into UCAS hub. This could be a hotline, an online chat or a webform.

You can apply to multiple universities in Clearing and get several ‘verbal’ offers. These may be via email or on a webform, but they are still known as verbal offers.

Once you receive an offer you want to accept, you can add it into UCAS Hub using the “add a clearing choice” button. You can only add one offer even if you received multiple verbal ones.

On A-level Results Day, you will only be able to add a Clearing offer onto UCAS Hub after 1pm. On any other day, you can add a Clearing offer straight away once you have decided which offer you would like to accept.

Don’t forget – most universities will give you a deadline for when you need to accept the offer, so make sure to check this carefully.
