Gaining real-world insight from major shipping companies

I appreciated the opportunity to spend a week in Athens at Almi Tankers, where we got to see how they operate and understand more about their business. It really helped to ‘connect the dots’ of what we had learned on the course. Another great thing about the course is that major companies, like Maersk, come in to give presentations. It gives you an opportunity to talk and start to build a relationship. That makes it easier when you are applying for jobs because you can mention you’ve already been interacting with their employees and know about their company. Several people on my course secured their jobs in this way.

My time at Bayes prepared me well for my roles – I was an Analyst for the Bayes Shipping Society, generating weekly reports on Gas and LPG and freight rates. That teamwork element and knowledge have really helped me in my career. I joined as an Analyst in Clean Petroleum Products at Steem 1960 shipbrokers, but after less than a year I’ve been promoted to Head of Gas, with responsibility for analysing gas research worldwide. It’s definitely been a good investment.

"Choosing the MSc Energy, Trade and Finance at Bayes was the turning point in my career. At the peak of the 2022 energy crisis, I wanted to deepen my expertise in finance while understanding the fast‑changing dynamics of energy and global trade. The course gave me exactly that, from analysing how commodities like oil, gas and renewables are traded, to exploring logistics and international finance. Projects such as our group Business Plan and the energy economics module showed me how theory comes alive in practice, and these experiences directly shaped my later work in consulting and investment banking.
